‘Egao no Kimi wa Taiyou Sa’ is the first single by Morning Musume ’14. I really anticipated this single because I was highly impressed by their previous single. It consisted of powerful choreography and great quality music videos. The improvement of each member was eminent. The group improved as a whole as well. Also because it was a triple A-side single I believed that Tsunku had big plans for the group. Unfortunately, I was slightly disappointed with the music video for this new song. It lacked innovation and was a downgrade from ‘Wagamama Kinomama Ai no Joke’.
Although I do confess to liking the effects shown throughout the music video, I was not a fan of the plain white closed set. The choreography was not as powerful and jaw-dropping as usual and it lacked synchronization. The first time I heard the song I was confused. It was an organized mess. It was all over the place and the transitions between the rapping verses and the chorus were irregular. However, in listening to the song a few more times I gained a greater respect for it. It is an out-of-the-box song that surpasses the typical generic JPOP songs. The lyrics are inspirational and are meant to uplift those who listen to it. I just wish that just as much innovation was placed in the music video.
Although I was disappointed by the music video I would not hesitate to support the group with their new single. I still have high expectations for the remaining two music videos for the triple A-side. I am especially enthusiastic for ‘Kimi no Kawari wa Iyashinai’, the cheer song for the 2014 Japanese Winter Olympic Team. Tsunku described this song as high energy with powerful and complicated dance choreography. So I am excited to see what they will bring to the table.
