The Kara Project
I was not a huge fan of Kara, but I really admired their music and their members, so I was devastated when Jiyoung and Nicole announced their leave from the group. When the agency announced that new members will be added to the group I could not help but to feel a bit apprehensive. However, I pushed those feelings aside and decided to avidly follow the reality show, “The Kara Project”. This show showcased seven trainees that were hopeful to join this veteran group. We saw the trainees work hard while singing, dancing and performing on live stages in order to match their sunbaes.
I wanted to review each episode, but since I am currently working I have not found time to do so or even update my blog regularly. Unfortunately, the show is finished and a winner has already been chosen, so I will just comment on each member that participated, including the winner, and their performance and appeal to me.
Youngji is the winner of The Kara Project. She has already filmed her first music video with the group and is currently preparing for the group’s comeback later this year. She really caught my attention in the first episode. During her personal interview she stated that her family did not fully believe and support her dream of becoming a singer. This was clarified in the last episode when her sister stated that she too wanted to be a singer when she was “naïve”. Unfortunately, Youngji got into an accident that landed her in a hospital and making her miss two of the challenges in the show. However, despite the problems she faced, she was chosen as the favorite and still became a member of Kara, which has me feeling a bit iffy. I would not deny that she was determined and she was a good dancer and singer, but I must admit that I was a bit disappointed in this choice. She was an interesting individual, but personally she did not fit Kara’s style or skills. She did not have much stage presence as some of the other participants and she was a good performer, but there were other contestants that were much better. However, I will cast a watchful eye on Youngji and look forward to her improvement and her tenure in the group.
She was one of my favorite participants of the show! She was so adorable and she was the best dancer of the group! Although I really admired her I also believed that she was too young to join the group. The current Kara members are all over the age of 20, so letting a 15 year old join the group would create a huge age gap and may create awkward and strange relationships among the members. There may even be a clash of personalities. I believed that much of the Kamilias agreed with this fact because even though Yooji had high expert votes throughout the competition the global and fans votes were very low. I think it is better for her to debut in another group with a different concept. A part of me wished that she can join the Japanese group, Morning Musume; she would fit right in!
I often forgot that she was part of the competition. She did not capture my interest in any way. Nothing stood out to me in her vocal or performing ability, so it was no surprise to me that she was not chosen.
I really loved Sojin. I was very heart-broken when she was not chosen. She stated that this was her last challenge because she was getting too old to debut. She was of the right age to join the group. She would fit right in with the members age-wise. She showed her commitment and determination throughout the whole show. She listened to her criticisms and used them to improve herself. She had the perfect sex appeal, vocal and performing talent for Kara. In my opinion, she was the perfect choice! I really hope that she does not end her dream here. I hope to see her in a new group soon because she has great talent and determination and I would hate to see it go to waste.
Just like Shiyoon, I often forgot that she was part of the competition. Only a few times her singing has captured my attention. However, I would love to see her in another group in the future.
Along with Sojin and Youngji, Somin was a favorite among viewers. She had a powerful voice and when performing with the other competitors she had great stage presence. I really liked seeing her perform during the “Lupin” stages. She can dance well, but during her individual stages she seemed to walk around and stare at the audience more than really dancing. She did not “wow” me during her individual stages and I really anticipated seeing what she had to offer as an individual artist. I would have liked to see her in Kara. She looks a lot like Goo Hara! I think I would have gotten confused at times!
I remember when I saw the teasers for the show I thought that she was the youngest participant. I was clearly mistaken (laughs), but she was another one of my favorites. For a youthful and small person, she has such an amazing and mature voice! Throughout the show she was known as the girl with the “honey voice”. It was sweet and soothing. She also had the greatest stage presence among the girls. However, as much as I liked her she did not fit the Kara image. Like Yooji, I would like to see her in different group with a completely different style and concept.
As I mentioned previously, comeback preparations for Kara has already started. Youngji has just joined the group and she is already working hard. I am eager and curious to see how she fits in the group. On the other hand, I hope to see the girls who did not make the cut in another group very soon. All of them were very talented and it would be a pity to see their talent go to waste.
Congrats to Youngji and good luck in Kara!
