Everyone was excited for Kara’s comeback. It almost seemed as if Kara was at its end with the departures of Nicole and Jiyoung. Many fans even protested when DSP Media announced that they were adding a new member through a short reality series, “The Kara Project”. The winner of this series was Youngji, a nineteen-year-old trainee that was about to give up on her dream of becoming a singer. Even after missing two of the challenges during the competition, her large fan base placed her on top of the group, giving her the position as a new member of Kara. Initially, I was not happy with this new addition because I thought that there were better choices than Youngji. However, I still anticipated seeing how she would be incorporated in this new comeback.
“Mamma Mia” is the name of Kara’s comeback. When the name of the song was released I had no idea what to expect. What concept would they pursue? How would Youngji be incorporated in this song and video? Would I like the song? These were some of the questions running through my mind.
I was very impressed when the music video was released. I had the video on repeat-something that I do not do very often unless the song and video are very good. It is an upbeat and party song that suited Kara perfectly. It was not a complete sexy concept. There were periods of sensuality throughout the video, but it did not seem fake and forced. It balanced well with other elements of the song and video.
I have listened to the song so many times I can sing along to it! The song and choreography were disjointed, but fit in well together. Each member had their own part and there were even individual dance portions in the choreography with the members and back up dancers. The dance was high-energy and addictive. They looked like they had fun doing it and made me want to learn the choreography. It has been a while since I have been so excited to learn a dance.
Youngji did not have that many parts in the song, but still rocked her parts. She fits in with well in the group. She was natural and it almost appeared as if she was a member since their debut. All the members sounded and looked great, especially Hara and Seungyeon.
I really love the song and I highly recommend it, especially to those who decided to skip this comeback because of Youngji. She sounded great and the song and video were really good. Kara maintained their image and style. It is as if the group faced no major changes in the past few months. I have not listened to the rest of the mini album, “Day & Night”, as yet, but I am sure that it will be just as good as the title song.
