Review: “Hello Bitches” by CL

Hello Bitches

This review will be a very short one because there is almost NOTHING I like about this song or music video. I am not sure if this is CL’s official debut into the American music industry, or if it is a prelude to the real thing, either way it has left me highly disappointed.

I think my expectation for this comeback was too high. There seemed to be a lot of preparation put into it, or so the media portrayed. I expected CL to show her true creative talent and sassy appeal. I expected to be blown away by an elaborate, spicy and high quality music video, but we received the opposite.

Firstly, I must say that the song was just unappealing. The instrumental had a bit of an Indian or Bollywood vibe to it (it reminded me of MTBD), and it had so much potential. They had a great idea to infuse Korean and English within the lyrics, but the lyrics were tedious to listen to and lacking innovation.

The song is pretty much like all the other songs in the modern-day American hip-hop industry, tasteless, unappealing and uninteresting. CL has so much potential, and I was hoping to see it with this release. This song does nothing for her and does not portray her true talents. It makes me wonder what CL has been doing in America for all these months.

Even the music video was a huge disappointment to me. There was nothing memorable or mind-blowing about it. It was simple and took place in what seemed to be a basement or underground club, with a few pop-up graphics throughout the video.

Even if it was “dance performance” video, I was not too fond of the choreography. It was proactive and made me uncomfortable to watch. These were the same dancers that were in Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” music video. In that video, the dance was more structured and appealing and clearly drew inspiration from the dancehall genre. In “Hello Bitches” the choreography had more of a Miley Cyrus appeal to it. There were a lot of sticking out of tongues, twerking and body touching. The dance was disappointing just like the overall video.

This video and song is lacking so much. My expectations were too high and I wasn’t pleased with this comeback. I can only hope that CL releases much higher quality music and videos in the future. Don’t get me wrong, I really love CL, but I think I would have preferred to see an official 2NE1 comeback instead of this anticlimactic solo release.
