This is the start of a new weekly series! Each Friday, I will be featuring idols, Japanese and Korean, who are born in the same year. More information about this new series can be found in this post.
This week, the idols of the “90-line” are featured!
Idols that are part of this age group are or will be turning 27 years old (international age). This week’s idols are featured in the picture below:
The list of 90’s babies is long, especially for KPOP idols. Many of the JPOP idols that I know are either much older than me (‘80’s) or a bit younger (late ‘90’s). I am not familiar with many of the JPOP idols this week.
Yoseob (Highlight), N (ViXX), Xiumin (EXO), Choa and Way (Crayon Pop) took me by surprise. These are idols that look much younger than their actual age. It is hard to believe that these idols are nearing 30!
Hamamura Sota can also be included in the list of idols that shocked me since many of the Da-iCE songs that I listen to are upbeat, preppy and bubbly. Not to mention, Sota’s voice sounds a bit child-like.
Bora (ex-Sistar), Sooyoung (SNSD), Chansung (2PM), Hong Ki (FT ISLAND), Hiro (FEMM), Jonghun (FT ISLAND), Seungri (BIGBANG) and Jonghyun (x2 – CN BLUE & SHINee) did not surprise me in any way. I am familiar with their ages and they often pursue more mature concepts in their music.
I actually thought that Cheetah and Kyungri were a bit older because of their really mature physical appearances.
I know that the members of Hey! Say! Jump are grown men now, but their youthful image from 10 years ago is still burnt into my brain. That may be because I have not been keeping up with them as much as I used to.
Concepts vary across groups. There are some groups like A Pink that has a consistent concept. There are other groups like BTS and SNSD that changes concepts with almost every new single. Age sometimes has an impact on what type of concept a group pursues.
Just look at NCT Dream!
What I have noticed, many of the groups with members in the ‘90s-line pursue more mature concepts.
There are a few groups that stray from the majority and do a bubbly and playful concept:
Then there are groups that you can’t really are not really influenced by age groups. I like to call these groups “age-neutral”.
Bands (CN BLUE, Scandal & FT ISLAND)
Dance (The Rampage from EXILE Tribe)
What I love about the ’90-line are their good genes. Not only are they good-looking but also they are all super talented.
We have the songwriters like Yong Guk (B.A.P), Hong Ki (FT ISLAND), Jonghyun (SHINee), Jieun (Secret), Minhyuk (BTOB) and more.
We have the dancers like Bora (ex-Sistar), Likiya (Rampage), Yoona (SNSD), N (VIXX), B-Bomb (Block B) and more.
There are also great vocalists like Sota (Da-iCE), Junho (2PM), Jonghyun (SHINee), Hyemi (Fiestar), Taeil (Block B), Leo (VIXX) and more.
I respect this age-line and their talents. Some of my biases are in this age-line!
Even though they are soon to turn thirty, may they continue to pursue their passion with full energy!
Next week, we will take a glimpse into the ’91-line!
