WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS. READ AT YOUR DISCRETION!
Fall in Love with Me (2014)
Starring: Aaron Yan & Tia Li
Completed Episodes: 4
Description: I loved Tia Li in the Taiwanese adaption of “Hayate the Combat Butler.” She was in the support role then, so I was excited to see her lead a show. This show is decent. It does not pull me in or capture my interest. I feel like I am watching it out of necessity to finish what I started. A lot of the plot is cliched and does not make sense to me. The lead male, Lu Tian Xing, is “disguised,” for many scenes in the show. However, his disguise is just changed clothes, a different name and glasses. How can that look fool anyone? Even, though the lead female did not believe him at first, she eventually accepted it. I guess he is the new Clark Kent.
Meteor Garden (2018)
Starring: Dylan Wang & Shen Yue
Completed Episodes: 14
Description: Gosh, this show is a pain to get through. I understand it is popular because it is a remake of “Boys Over Flowers” and “Hana Yori Dango.” This show veers a bit from the original to suit the Chinese setting. My problem with this show is that it is unnecessarily long. There are fifty episodes! Why does a series need to last so long? The plot is dragging along and can get very tedious to watch. I probably would not finish this show until the end of this year.
Reply 1994 (2013)
Country: South Korea
Starring: Go Ara & Jung Woo
Completed Episodes: 13
Description: I did not like this show at first, especially since it seemed to be a carbon copy of “Reply 1997,” just in a different era. There was a specific scene that made me start liking this show some more. Without trying to give away too many spoilers, it was when the male lead, Trash, held the female lead, Na Jung, from behind. At this time, he did not know her feelings towards him and only thought of him as his sister (or so we think). As a romantic sap, I found that scene very cute and heart-warming, especially in the context of what was going on in the show. I know that it is a very vague description, but I am trying to avoid spoilers as much as possible! I suggest watching the show if you have not as yet.
Take My Brother Away (2018)
Starring: Joseph Zeng & Sun Qian
Completed Episodes: 12
Description: I have learnt not to take this drama seriously. It is meant to be a wacky comedy that has some unrealistic elements. I have not watched many Chinese shows like this, so it is refreshing. I love the lead character, Shi Fen, played by Joseph Zeng. I need to watch more shows with him in it. I also am drawn to Miaomiao, played by Lu Xiao Yu. I did not realize that she was on “Produce 101 China!” She looks a lot like Choi Yoojung from Weki Meki. If they ever make a Korean version of this show, Yoojung should play the part of Miaomiao! My only complaint about this show is like “Meteor Garden,” it is long with thirty episodes.
The Beauty Inside (2018)
Country: South Korea
Starring: Seo Hyun Jin & Lee Min Ki
Completed Episodes: 6
Description: This show is slow and confusing. It is tedious to watch at its current point, and it does not help that I am watching many other shows that I consider to be more interesting at the same time. Not to mention, the lead male looks scary and intimidating. I might put this drama on the backburner for a while.
Well-Intended Love (2019)
Starring: Simona Wang & Xu Kai Cheng
Completed Episodes: 19
Description: I LOVE this drama. It is probably one of my favourite Chinese dramas. I started this show on a whim. It was a random choice when it came up on my Netflix recommendations. However, I loved it from the first episode. The story has an exciting plot that progresses well. All the main characters seem to have good chemistry with one another. Whoever did the casting needs a gold star and a standing ovation. The relationship between the lead male and female character reminds me of the main characters in “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim,” which is another drama that I love.
I have strong second-lead syndrome with Chu Yan. As much as I love Ling Yi Zhou with Xia Lin, I also love the relationship she has with Chu Yan. Ironically, I hated him at first and declared that I would never fall for him, but that quickly changed as the series progressed.
I am near the end of the drama with one more episode to go. I am hesitant to watch it because I am not ready to let the show end! I love it that much!
Country: South Korea
Starring: Park Bo Young & Ahn Hyo Seop
Completed Episodes: 1
I have only watched one episode of this show so far. Just like “Well-Intended Love,” I came across this show as a recommendation. I do not have much to say since I just started it, but it looks exciting. Hopefully, the rest of the series is good!
